As summer sizzles on our minds often drift to a high alpine wildflower meadow. There are many places across Colorado where you can escape the heat, get up high and experience beautiful wildflowers. Depending on where you are in the state, different blooming times as well as different types will be found. With eight different ecosystems across the state, the variety and diversity of wildflowers is abundant.
Colorado is home to a stunning array of wildflowers, painting its landscapes with vibrant colors during the spring and summer months.
Grasslands, riparian, semi-desert shrubland, pinyon juniper woodland, montane shrubland, montane forest, subalpine forest, and alpine tundra.
Crested Butte
Known as the “Wildflower Capital of Colorado,” Crested Butte boasts a diverse range of wildflowers. The surrounding mountains and valleys are blanketed with colorful blooms from late June through August. While many different types of wildflowers can be seen here, lupine stands out as one of the best-known and sought after. You can hike the aptly named Lupine trail to see this spectacular array of blooms.
Maroon Bells-Snowmass Wilderness
Located near Aspen, this wilderness area is famous for its iconic Maroon Bells and abundant wildflowers. Trails such as the Maroon Lake Scenic Trail and Crater Lake Trail offer excellent opportunities for wildflower viewing.
Mount Blue Sky Wilderness
The high-altitude trails near Mount Evans, including the Chicago Lakes Trail and Mount Evans Summit Trail, are surrounded by fields of wildflowers during the summer months. The Mount Goliath Natural Area is known for its display of alpine wildflowers.
Guanella Pass
This scenic byway between Georgetown and Grant is lined with fields of wildflowers during the summer months. The area offers stunning views of Mount Bierstadt and Mount Evans, making it a popular spot for photography.
Rocky Mountain National Park
Numerous trails throughout Rocky Mountain National Park offer opportunities to see wildflowers. The Wild Basin area, Bear Lake area, and the trails around Glacier Gorge are particularly known for their wildflower displays.
Great Sand Dunes National Park
In addition to towering sand dunes, this park in southern Colorado is home to a variety of wildflowers, especially in the spring and early summer. The dunes and surrounding mountains create a unique backdrop for wildflower viewing.
San Juan Mountains
The San Juan Mountains in southwestern Colorado are known for their rugged beauty and abundant wildflowers. The Yankee Boy Basin near Ouray and the Ice Lakes Basin near Silverton are popular destinations for wildflower enthusiasts.
Colorado National Monument
This lesser-known gem on the western slope of Colorado features colorful rock formations and desert wildflowers. The Monument Canyon Trail and Rim Rock Drive offer opportunities to see a variety of blooms.
